Not directly, though you can certainly copy and paste text. There is also an option in the forums to enable HTML formatting, which would allow you to verbatim copy chunks of the original HTML.

Here is my issue: After I log out of the server, the application stops running (DUH, of course! Right?). Using this forum, I noticed that there is a pfconsole.exe I can run as a service instead. This fits my needs much better, but will I have to go through two days of setup steps again? Is there any way to port my current settings from the projectforum.exe version to the pfconsole.exe version? Thanks in advance for any help.

Does it make sense? is that going to give me trouble later?
Thanks in advance.
No, that's not really going to work. ProjectForum is a long-running program (daemon), whereas CGI programs run quickly then finish. You could either ask them if they're willing to set it up for you (i.e. have them start it), or you may want to look at other options, such as our own hosting service.

[Derek Kelly]: We recently purchased PF and I have a question. Is there some easy way to customize & edit the ProjectForum Home page? We are using PF for our Intranet and would like to treat this as the main page for adding announcements, common links, etc. but I see no way of easily doing this. Also, can the page layout be altered? Among other things, the space between the list of groups and the main body text is very wide and we'd like to close that gap for aesthetic reasons.
It would also be nice to be able to post comments to the main PF Home page just like any other.
[Mark]: Some people have done extensive changes to the help page, through extensive use of HTML code in the message of the day area (e.g. see http://www.sytech.org - yes, that is ProjectForum). However, at present this is not easy to do.
[Derek Kelly]: OK, then is there any way I can create an extra group, call it Main or something and relink everything in PF that references "Site Home" to that group? In a standard group I can accomplish everything I need to. I could move all the group links under this Main group, heep the original Site Home hidden from users and only use the original Site Home when I need to add groups by moving it to a non referenced URL and explicitly accessing it when needed for admin purposes. No, not possible now.

[Derek Kelly]: Also, when viewing pages in sub forums the links at the very bottom right do not show the complete path to the document you are viewing...
Example - when viewing a document at the actual path:
Site Home > Customer Service > Customers > Customer #1 > Test Plan
We actually see the link path as:
Site Home > Customer Service > Test Plan
Is there any way to show the complete path?
[Mark]: This is not a full path of links used to get to the document; there can in fact be many different ways to reach a document, because pages in a forum do not form a hierarchy, and there can be arbitrary connections between them. The only hierarchy, which the breadcrumbs at the bottom show, is where the page fits in within the forum.
[Derek Kelly]: Understood, but is there some way to do this? Not at present, no.

We *think* we had an issue where someone did just that, but the changes were not reflected in the file pointed to by the page link.
No, what is happening is when you click on the link, the file is downloaded to the local PC, and editing takes place there. The changed file must still be uploaded back to ProjectForum, to replace the old one. This step doesn't happen automatically.

Is there any way I can limit certain credentials to certain areas? If the answers are not possible with PF istelf - then suggestions are welcomed.
Have you investigated setting up user accounts in PF? This allows you to restrict access to different forums in different ways...
[Derek Kelly]: yes, but I need a global password that allows/denies entry to the server in general in order to restrict access from outside. Once inside our network, we're happy to limit access to each group with a password.
You should be able to accomplish this by putting a proxy server between PF and the outside world; there is nothing in PF to do it directly

This presents a poor visual look for things that have various lengths like rss feeds for example. Any way to indent, or center, or right-justify the table? (Before tables I would use ===, which, in addition to manually aligning the columns, also allows me to manually indent whole thing.) I'd also like to be able to put a border around the cells.
There's of course a tension between more powerful markup and the desire to keep things as easy to use as possible. For things like you're looking for, right now the approach you'll have to use is enabling HTML formatting.
Posted at Jun 12/2005 06:52AM:
Chuck F: Refer to Bob R's post...Unfortunately, if you turn on HTML and especially PHP, you have just built a script kiddie magnet. So you are esentially locked out of allowing access from the net.
Most ProjectForum sites run password-protected, as opposed to fully open e.g. like Wikipedia. I'd agree there are some risks with allowing arbitrary HTML in a completely open site.

Your reader should be smart enough to track which items have been already read... however, the feed is behaving correctly, as all (well, the last 15 or so) items should be served to you. That worked! As you may have gathered, I'm new to RSS feeds and readers as well! Thanks.

G'day. We're currently trialling the free version of PF to see if it increases team productivity. We also have some team members that cannot get to the internal LAN (high security, no external links etc) and run PF directly to the main teams group. From what I see we can just send them the DB files so they can read, but are there any other techniques or suggestions to allow them to get at pages? We cannot give them any sort of proxy TCP link, but can send them files etc. If it helps, the remote users are typically documenters, who just want to see what else needs to go in the manuals they write.
There is an option in each forum to allow you to export the forum to HTML files etc. on disk
Cool, I missed that, thanks.

[Mike]: First, I think the software is great and works very well. We use it very extensively in our development organization (s/w dev company).
We recently upgraded to 4.6 and I have some feedback:
- Email notifications:
- Was confused initially because I added an email address, but when going back in to track changes page there was no record of it - very difficult to tell if you have enabled notifications for a page
- Suggest having the email address set globally for the user (either by user or administrator) and then having a simple check box at the bottom of each page to enable page notifications - easy to turn on and off and clear whether it is on or off - also means not having to enter your email address over and over again
- For group wide emails, it would be nice if the email included links to all of the pages that changed and not just the main page - as it is when you see the email, you have to go to the forum and check the recent changes to see if it's something you care about
With regard to above... PF has a number of different ways to setup user authentication; unfortunately what you suggest cannot accommodate all of them, so initially we've done it this way. The sort of thing you suggest is something we're considering for the future.
- It would be nice if there was an up-to-date, single source of editing/formatting information. The closest I can find is http://www.projectforum.com/formatting.html and that still doesn't seem complete (e.g. missing toc:). Better would be a link from the editing hints to something that included this summary (but was specific to the version installed) The page you note is the correct one, though presently lagging behind the application a little bit. Will be corrected soon...
- It may be possible, but in my brief digging it's not obvious - I'd like to increase the number of rows in the editing window. We use editing more than posts and it's difficult to navigate with a small number of rows. Not there not, but should be appearing in an upcoming release.
Posted at Oct 27/2005 02:17PM:
[Mike]: One additional comment on email notification is that I seem to get notified of changes even when it was me that made them. This causes me to check to see what was changed only to find it was the page I was just working on.
This also is attributed to the different user authentication setup options.

While your browser may have a popup menu for the link allowing you to do this, you're correct that the behavior we've defined (intentionally) is to have external links open in a new window.
Thanks

http://192.168.1.101, it serves fine. However, if I try to access it via the internet, it wont serve. I'm using DynDNS to redirect to my network, but I think that's irrelevant, since I can turn on web sharing (Mac's built in Apache server) and it serves back content without any problem. I can't even access it from other PCs on my own network.. Any ideas why it seems to serve fine to iteself, but not to anything else? Is it anything to do with permissions on the desktop? I do generally log in as administrator. Would that make a difference?
Both the addresses you give are local, so of course you'd need the remote address to access from offsite. You'll want to check the firewall pane in the Sharing setup to make sure the ports you're running it on are available.

Alex Pang: I'm interested in tracking use of our wiki more precisely than we can with the User Activity Summary page. In particular, I'd like to do two things:
1) Be able to see what pages are most commonly-visited;
2) Build a picture of the paths that users take as they move through the site.
Is data that would support such views available? I can see that there's some information about user account activity that's kept, but the ability to reconstruct reading and editoring behavior-- i.e., a user's path through the wiki-- would be valuable. There's more data stored than is available in the interface currently. You should be able to extract this from the backend databases with a bit of open source scripting... email us if you would like to pursue this approach.

/usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libstdc++.so.3" not found, required by "projectforum"
ProjectForum was compiled with an older version of FreeBSD; the default libraries on your system are newer than the ones we compiled against. Check on your system to see if you have a /usr/lib/compat/libstdc++.so.3 file, which I've seen reference to in some web postings. If so, you may need to create a link to that file from /usr/lib

[Kim]: I'd really appreciate a facility which enabled me to create simple tables without resorting to allowing HTML markup. One system I've seen
ExampleTableMarkup uses the | character to delimit columns and is very effective and simple to use.

[Larry Liberty]: I was wondering if (or when) more powerful (perhaps Google-like) search functionality could be added to PF?

[Philip Dhingra]: I wish I had more customization options. Gif-replacement and having three hooks for HTML files isn't enough for me. For example, I want to make a DHTML menu of the site map that disappears and re-appears when you hover your mouse over it. I want to have dissappearing and re-appearing "post your comments" box.
Are there any plans in the future for a deeper amount of customization, more on par with the flexibility that open-source pages have? I understand the benefits of proprietary software, but in OSS, you can really re-architect the presentation layer.
We really like PF, and want to keep using it, really want to stretch it to meet our UI needs.
Yes, this is definitely an area that we're hoping to do more with in the future. Having said that, it's quite remarkable what some people have done using the existing hooks already...

JamesY: Is there any support for refactoring? Eg take a root page and pages referenced from it and turn it into a new project; take a section of text within a page and turn it into a new page.

[johnw]: It would be really good if pf had a gantt chart, something really simple would be ok, to get a visual of project timeings.

Is there a way to 'preview' your wiki edits before posting?
Otherwise it would seem that the history buffer would get clogged with minor syntax fixes.
It seems like there should be a 'preview' button next to the post button.

nic: We would like to have the following features :
A preview button (before posting) as Greg proposed
Simple tables; what Kim proposed (ExampleTableMarkup) looks good
A way to edit with a non proportional font when doing preformatted blocks (code, but also tables currently)

[James]: I would like the "Project" name to appear on the projects home page header. so project "fred" has a home page that is headed "Fred Home" rather than simply Home.

[James]: I would like to be able to edit just parts of a page. As a page grows large it would be nice to insert "edit" links that allowed only the material between it and the previous "edit" link to be placed into the edit text area. I am concerned that when pages become long (as they will from time to time) they will become too difficult to fine tune.

[Karen]: I've been looking at the ExampleTableMarkup as suggested but I can't make it work. (i'm a new user)

[Mark]: Tables are not currently implemented in ProjectForum, though this will likely be coming in a not-too-distant release.

[Karen]: thanks Mark - I have another request.
Previous posting from Bob R asked for Email Notification. I understand the response to use RSS but personally, I find I don't look at my newsaggregator. Staff have indicated that they would like notification into their email. This is common with many other forums. Is this planned?
thanks

[Bill]: I have a few thoughts.
1. how about, by default, making the group name at the top of the page a link to get back to the group home page. I think that this would be particularly helpful for projects.
2. threaded discussions would be very helpful - especially for something like a trouble/solution (or help desk) log. Editing the original post is possible, but this doesn't track when the updated post occurred as far as I can tell.
2a. I prefer RSS notification for most purposes but for an application like this, an automated email to the original poster (the person with the problem) would be nice.)
3. Documentation (in the manual) for adding key pages is helpful, since the syntax differs substantially from that used to refer to pages elsewhere. This was particularly evident when I wanted to add a Key Page to each project in a group. It wasn't too hard to figure out the correct syntax: Linkname (../groupname/pagename) "tooltip" -- but I went through several iterations to do it .. starting with Linkname (../MAINFORUMPREFIX/pagename) and including groupname#pagename, Linkname (groupname#pagename), Linkname (../pagename).
It's a good feature to have easily available. Nice.
4. Oh, and a protected area at the top of a page so that new posts could appear at the top without pushing the instructions on how to post down to the bottom. That's probably a substantial change, but...if it's not a big deal it would be nice to have without needing to learn CSS.

[Keith]:
Maybe it's a weird suggestion but adding a function that will capture a webpage on the web and save it locally and display it.
The reason being is that sometimes i like to link to pages that have images and other reference materials for our projects and they sometimes go down or are changed and images are removed.
so something like addpage:http://www.whatever.com and it will grab it and make it local.

[Kevin]: A minor issue, to be sure: was hoping that attached file icons could be smaller (or nonexistent), so as to make the text stay inline (would really help the readability in most cases)
You can modify the icon via changing the theme
Well, I guess I like Broadcast best ... (with smaller icons) - thanks
