Collin: I am running Project Forum on a computer with limited disk space. I want the default file locations to be on a large external HD rather than on the startup disk. How can I accomplish this? Thanks. We haven't tried this, but you may be able to make a file system link from the 'attachments##' directories to your remote disk. You can also install PF on the other hard drive altogether... I assume this is a local, not a network drive.

[Collin]: I installed PF on the external drive (yes, a local FW drive) but it still kept its data files and attachments in the library directory on the small internal HD. I made an alias (is that what you meant by a file system link?) of the "Groups" directory, pointing to the external HD, but PF wouldn't run without the real thing there. Any ideas welcome, thanks!

[X]: Can I link to files on my local computer? E.g. file:///D:\Docs\My%20Doc.doc doesn't do anything when i click on it. The file exists on my D drive.

Added by Graham, Jan 31: This doesn't work for me either, whereas files with a network path work fine. Maybe it has something to do with the drive letter.

[George]: Just wondering about something. When editing a page (as I am doing now) I have seen it recommended that html not be used. I am wondering why this is the case. With HTML so simple and with so many people knowing it, wouldn't it be more natural to use it to do simple things, like bolding and italics, as opposed to learning a whole new system for doing the same thing? Just looking to understand. Simple HTML isn't the issue, it's the more complex stuff. But if you've got a user group where people are already proficient with HTML, go for it...

Anyone can help? This is the error that I am getting whenver I try and execute ./projectforum under Ubuntu 2.6.10-5-powerpc "./projectforum: cannot execute binary file" .. Any ideas would be great.. Linux version is for intel linux only

[Glenn Meyer]: My demo version reverted to the free version last week because the license expired. I can view the archived groups, but not the archived projects that I created within the groups, assuming that the projects were archived at all. Note that when I exported the groups and then unbundled and viewed the exports in a browser without ProjectForum, I also couldn't view the documents I had placed in the projects. Are projects archived and exported? If they are, why can't I see them? The free version doesn't support projects, so while they're there, you can't get at them.

[BenG]: Is there a way to search all the forums? If so, what version of PF is required? You can only search within a single group (and any contained projects) at a time.

Where is the password file kept in projectforum? Is it possible to use Windows 2003 server password authentication system for projectforum users so that when users login to the 2003 server where projectforum and wiki is installed, they are authenticated automatically to projectforum wiki? If Yes, how would this be achieved (merging 2003 server password system and projectforum wiki)? Passwords are kept as part of the databases maintained by ProjectForum, and at present cannot be integrated with the Win2003 password scheme

NRenfree: I will be uploading a huge file to our ProjectForum from offsite. There is always the possibility of an Internet 'hiccup'. Does ProjectForum start unfinished uploads from where they left off or from the beginning? From the beginning, there's no facility to restart an upload now.

Posted at Mar 31/2006 12:33PM:
Sean: This should really go on the wishlist but it's currently locked:

Another wiki application that I use -- WikidPad -- changes link colour to indicate whether the link created has data in it or not. Thus if it's new or empty, it's one colour; if it contains info it's another. It's very useful as kind of error checking when you're entering in a link to a preexisting page or for a reminder to go back and fill something out...

It would also be cool if link colour could be used to indicate whether there is *new* data since the last time the user viewed that page...

Posted at Apr 06/2006 10:18AM:
Sean: There seems to be a problem with file links in Firefox vs. Internet Explorer... If you enter something like: [file:\\server\path\file.txt] it works fine in IE, but Firefox shows the link as: file:///\\server\path\file.txt and it doesn't do anything... :( Any thoughts? Yes, Firefox is more picky about these things... using forward slashes instead of backslashes should work on both browsers

[Stephanie]: We have encountered problems with concurrent page editing. A message indicating that "Other changes have been made to this page since you started editing it" does not consistently appear and as such, content is deleted. Is there a way to overcome this problem? There are some cases when that message will not appear, but only in cases where ProjectForum is able to resolve the conflicts itself... typically when the first person has added content to the beginning or end of the page, and then the second person has edited in the middle. We're unaware of cases that result in deleted content... would you be able to provide a sequence of events so that we can try to reproduce here?

Posted at May 10/2006 02:09AM:
Matthias: IMHO the locking behaviour is somewhat strange. If person A updates a page which is concurrently edited by person B, person B is notified while saving. So B has to cut his meanwhile changes and paste it after canceling and reloading that page. The Open Current-Button does not work, at least with IE6 (page error). It would be better to radically prevent concurrent editing like in Wikit, I think, or troubles are likely to happen with inexperienced users.

Posted at May 10/2006 02:17AM:
Matthias: Another one, mentioned here before and therefore confirmed to be a problem (Environment is Windows PFCONSOLE-Service with IE): Sometimes (I suppose with complex pages only) when klicking through the document version history, the page layout gets destroyed (page content overlayed over the buttons and cluttered). Currently not reproducable, it seems.

Posted at May 10/2006 02:19AM:
Matthias: Addition to what I said about Locking: would be nice to see if a page is currently locked and which user is already editing.

Posted at May 10/2006 03:03AM:
Matthias: I don't see any differences between [rss:...], [rsslong:...] and [rssfull:...].

Posted at May 10/2006 03:07AM:
Matthias: Why isn't pfconsole in conjunction with winserv not fully handled by winserv? One can't stop the service via winserv or net stop or Services applet, because there is no ProjectForum running. It seems that winserv is only used as a starter. Would PFCONSOLE.EXE alone survive a logoff? What is the "official" way to stop a running ProjectForum (before backups, e.g.?)

Posted at May 10/2006 03:19AM:
Matthias: Another question concerning LOCKING: if one edits a page, I can't see any changes in filesystem timestemps. So I think the locking info is bufferd in main storage. But then when you end and restart the pfconsole.exe in between, are the current lock infos lost? That would mean another user can edit the same page without further warnings. In other words: Is the locking really reliable and fool-proof?

Posted at May 11/2006 05:45AM:
[Mark]: Matthias, locking is not an explicit operation based on when a user starts editing, but an explicit operation that you can invoke when a page is saved. Preventing editing altogether after another edit starts is not realistic, as users can abandon their edit (or indefinitely postpone it) without PF knowing about it. Finally, the different rss: includes vary in what content from the feed they display.

Matthias: What is the "official Way" to delete a Forum created by mistake? Ok, I was a little too fast - I found the answer myself...

Posted at May 12/2006 03:08AM:
Matthias: Ok, done further Tests regarding to Locking that let me look deeper into the logic. If two users alter something at the bottom of the page, things are appended without notice. If someone alters something at existing content, a warning appears at the 2nd saver. But still the Open Current Page-Button doesn't work... We'll be looking into the 'open current page' problem

[ENFORCE123]: I am a newbie at the wiki software. I need a closed secure system to communicate accross the internet. I have looked at the twiki and wiki but I don't understand the differences and uses and how it fits my purpose. Having a calendar to be shared and to post various files and comments from a closed system is imperative. The other plugins seem very useful. How do I get to the bottom of this. Very interested!! I need some answers right away if you can. Start at the ProjectForum home page and go from there. There is a full user manual which will provide a lot of details on how to use it. You'll also find that ProjectForum is far easier to setup than for example twiki.

Wishlist: This is more of a wishlist item than a support issue but it would be powerful if the include feature supported regular expression text replacement on the content of the page it imports. It may be necessary to support specific version numbers on the include command to make sure the regular expression can be tested on new pages before being published.

[Derek Kelly]: Is there a way to have the default home page for PF point to a project group instead of ###.###.###.##:3455/admin/directory.html? We use this as a corporate intranet and would like to have a home page that is fully editable like a standard PF wiki page. If you have only a single group on your site, there is an option in the Site Admin page to have the default home page redirect straight to that group. If you have more than one group though, this option is not available.

[ferdinand]: Is there a way to prevent LinkSpam in ProjectForum? Some other wikis seem to have ways to limit the number of links to other sites in postings or to disallow raw html links. Right now the only solution we could find in the PF manual is requiring users to have accounts. Right now there is no automated way to prevent it, and the ad hoc solutions that have sprung up don't seem to work that well... we'll keep on monitoring solutions

Uploaded Image [DLW]: One of my forums is defaulting to posting to the top of the page although the graoup admin setting is for the bottom. Also the check box is grayed out (see image above). got any ideas? Check the setting on the edit page, which I bet is saying comments should go on the top. The default setting on the group admin page is only to set the initial default for each new page, but the actual setting for that specific page is controlled on the edit page.

Thanks - that fixed the problem. - DLW

[Ilkka]: I have recently started using ProjectForum on our company's server. It was working fine for a while, however, now most links have stopped working and clicking on them causes an error which causes the whole program to stop functioning. In the error log it reads like this: {couldn't execute "open": no such file or directory} couldn't execute "open": no such file or directory while executing "# Compiled -- no source code available error "called a copy of a compiled script"" (procedure "LauncherOpenInBrowser" line 1) invoked from within "LauncherOpenInBrowser" invoked from within ".buttons.openinbrowser invoke" ("uplevel" body line 1) invoked from within "uplevel #0 [list $w invoke]" (procedure "tk::ButtonUp" line 24) invoked from within "tk::ButtonUp .buttons.openinbrowser" (command bound to event)

[Michele]: We've just purchased ProjectForum for our company and are having difficulty naming projects. When we create a new "Project" we have no clue how to name that project so that we don't have a list that reads: Project 1, Project 2, etc. Is there any way to give projects specific names? If so, how? This is done via the "Project Admin" page.

Posted at Jun 02/2006 05:03PM:
[keith] hey Michele.. you can adjust the name of projects when you login as admin on the main page, you'll have this little arrow icon > next to the project names.. click that and you can rename

The business has 4 client PC's running XP Pro and a Server running Windows Server 2000. I didnt find anything on the site about having it on a network - maybe its just a given. But would I be able to install the wiki on the server - and then would all the clients be able to access it and make changes through their web browsers? Yes, that's exactly how it would work.

[AndyR]: Is there any way to have an internal link with a different displayed name, i.e. page is called "Long Page Name" but I want it to display as something shorter when referenced. Example: [Long Page Name | Up] looks like Up (underlined) but still links to [Long Page Name] Thanks! No, this isn't supported - unless you specify it as an http link

[Matthew]: question about RSS - can we get more info somehow in the RSS feed? Maybe a link to the page at least? How would we do that? The RSS feed does in fact have a link to the page... can you let me know what reader you're using, and we can check for any incompatibilities...

ferdinand again: we're trying to proxy ProjectForum from a directory. We have followed the instructions on the HOWTO page, substituting "Redirect /courseforum http://192.168.0.1/courseforum/" with "Redirect /wiki http://www.nadine.be/wiki/" (we want people to get to the ProjectForum if they type "www.nadine.be/wiki" in their browser), and "ProxyPass /courseforum/ " with "ProxyPass /wiki/ ". Where did we go wrong? Safari returns the following error message: "Safari can’t open the page. Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://www.nadine.be/wiki///////////////////////////////////////////////////”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page." (it adds all the slashes itself) and Firefox does the same, returing this message: "The page isn't redirecting properly. Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete. * This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies." We are running MacOS X server 10.4.5, which uses Apache 1.3.3 if I'm not mistaken. Make sure you have exactly the same slashes in the configuration file as in the HOWTO... a one character difference can definitely break things, as we've found out on more than one occassion!
stephanie: We have subscribed to track changes once an hour to a group and to individual pages. Changes are made to the page and no email notification is received. Could you provide some advice? Have any emails been sent ever? You may want to double check your email server settings, and if they look correct, check the SMTP server's logs
stephanie again: Email notifications have been received when tracking changes once a day and once a week. Hourly email notifications are not received. Hmmm... not sure... we'll have to do some further investigations here and see if we can reproduce.
stephanie again: According to our IT Service Centre, email server has not received messages from Course Forum since 29 June 06. No blocks or filters have been applied. So the problem is not attributed to the frequency of notification. Could you provide some advice?
Chris Jefferies: Hi Mark (or whoever answers this). Someone has created a page called 'Changes' which has replaced the 'More Changes...' information normally generated by ProjectForum. I need to get rid of this page but the system regards it as special so there are no links for either 'Delete' or 'Rename'. I've even tried cheating by using 'admin/deletepage.html?pageid=1&return=page' but got nowhere with this. Help! Go back in 'Versions' to the first version of the page and restore it.
Sean: I'm trying to install projectforum on my webserver (3rd party hosted) which is running Linux (CentOS) with kernel 2.6.9-11.ELsmp; when I try to launch it ("./projectforum &") I get a message: "This software will not run on your system (Linux)." Any idea what's wrong? Also I was wondering are there any restrictions on the location of project forum on the server? No restrictions on locations. As per your server, could you run 'uname -a' and let us know what it returns? Linux server3.unifiedns.com 2.6.9-11.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Jun 8 17:54:20 CDT 2005 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
Thanks... I'm wondering if it might be a missing shared library. Try running "ldd -v projectforum" and let's see what that shows.
[deleted]
That all looked good. Was able to locate the place the error was generated, so will attempt to refine further. Could you please email us at support@courseforum.com so we can contact you directly? Hadn't heard from you, so I just wanted to check if you got the e-mail I sent... if not it's shaav at shaav dot com

Sean: Found a bug -- if you have more than 2 links to the same target page from the same orign, when you remove the links, the origin still appears in the references to the target. ex. if you link to Sean Todo from Task list more than twice, even when the links to Sean Todo have been removed from Task list, Task list still appears on included references from Task list. If there's an interim hack to fix this, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Will look into it, but I suspect there's not a workaround at present...

Sean: For a particular list, it's important to me to wrest control over the link styles (i.e. the colour) but of course, there's no way to specify a class within the A tag, a FONT tag on the outside is overidden by the A tag, and a FONT tag inside the square brackets is interpreted as part of the page name... SO, (unless you had a different suggesting), my interpretation of the best way to go about getting that control is by using a "Custom Link". The manual points here for information on creating custom links...?

Later: Nevermind -- I figured out how to do it with a span style definition. BUT, I have been wondering about custom links anyway, so I'd still like to know how they're defined. Right now it's a web service thing only; see http://www.courseforum.com/howto_include.html. Later on, we're considering ways to customize things without that.

Sean: I'm just full of stuff today... is there anyway to include references from different projects (or rather from the main to a project page?) Although they show up on the /refs page, they don't using [references:]. If not, suggestion for future implementation -- it would be cool if it behaved just like [recentchanges:] where you can specify the project: [recentchanges:2]; i.e. [references:] would include all references from the group and [references:2] would just supply the ones from the project. Or something like that. On the list...

Matthias: What is the actual size-limit for the wiki-database? Searched the mk4-docs but did'nt find a quick answer...

Matthias: Is it possible to include the actual version number in a document? like a $Id$ type thing? no...

Matthias: I noticed several errors in my SeaMonkey javaScript console window regarding CSS: ...unknown property 'cell-spacing/cell-padding'. Declaration ignored... or so. This appears several times. I'm currently using the broadcast theme. Well, I know the cellspacing and cellpadding properties of the table-tag, but what are cell-spacing and cell-padding?

Matthias: I've noticed that table borders do not appear in slide shows...

Keith:Is there anyway to include images from other groups? Even if it's not pw protected etc? You could include it via its web address... e.g. ...admin/image.html?imageid=12345

Tom Moore: The RSS feeds quote the local URLs, with 3455 port. I'd like my groups to be able to watch what is appearing on the group forum using their RSS readers, but they aren't all local, so we need the RSS feed URLs to reflect our proxied address. Is there a way to accomplish this?

Posted at Sep 12/2006 02:30 PM:
[Tom]: Having to specify both width and height of displayed images is really a pain. How about if only one number is specified it is taken to be the width and the length is set for constant aspect ratio?

Matthias: Klicking on a http://xyz-Link which is a CGI-url works. But including the same URL in an include:-Statement yields a [could not fetch included URL]-message. Is there something special with pages which are generated by CGIs besides a possible timeout-situation (which is not the case here)? I couldn't note the URL because it's on our intranet. In the latter case, remember that it's the machine running PF that is fetching the page, not your browser.. so if for example the page expects certain cookies or other things, they won't be there

Matthias: In general, it works, e.g. fetching the result of env.cgi (I'm using tclhttpd as the cgi hosting webserver). It must be some specific reason. One thing to note is that the html which does not include contains a form with input-fields; the script which produces the output is here.

Matthias: Ok, I think the reason is clear now. In some circumstances I use the REFERER info in my tclhttpd's Url_AccessInstall-Hook to see if the request is coming in from PF (this is to do some automatic security checking). And I suppose you do not send refererer info in your fetch request, is it right??? If I move the CGI to an "unproteced" dir where I don't intervent via Url_AccessInstall, it works as expected....

Matthias: Does someone have an example of how to proxy through tclhttpd? For now, I only do a Httpd_RedirectSelf to the real PF-URL, ending up with that URL in the browser-navigation bar...
Matthias: Manual page 63: should it be stated that the site admin sees groups that are marked as hidden from group directory?
Matthias: It is not possible to reference a page template from another group (e.g., group#template1) No Matthias: That makes it difficult to build pools of common templates...

Posted at Sep 10/2006 08:11PM:
[Keith]: Has anyone had problems with the new version, it accually crashed our Linux server, and at one point said something about a setup.tcl We've had no reports of that from anyone else, but if you could provide any more details...

Matthias: Is there any (undocumented) special syntax for searches (like OR, NOT, Wildcards* etc.)???
Matthias: Sorry for the many questions but they keep coming the deeper we are working with the product.... I've noticed that the use of "Umlauts" (like ä ö ü) in Pagenames leads to problems in specifying those namens in an URL... e.g.: I have a page called Wünsche der Benutzer. If I request this PF gives the following error message:
ProjectForum did not understand the following URL request in this forum: /W%FCnsche%20der%20Benutzer.
which is, as far as I know, a valid part of an URL. The "official" URL is always the number, but we'll look into that...

Tom Moore, 20 Sep 09:00
I'm taking meeting notes straight into the web page editor, and it occurs to me that, internet connections being what they are, it could be important to have a "Save and Keep Editing" button in addition to "Save Changes" and "Cancel" . I've added this to our suggestion database.. I see the rationale, but it's not something I've seen elsewhere before; save and then re-edit may have to suffice

Tom Moore, 19 Sep 21:00
IMHO, it should be possible to paste text from an email or a word processor and have it remain formatted conventionally. That means a <br> has to be added to every new line, to prevent html interpretation. Also, spaces or tabs at the beginning of lines should be retained for indenting of paragraphs.

Remember, you have decided that html tags are an option that is not advised, which implies that html conventions are not observed unless that option is turned on. Consistency is always the best policy. This would obviate the need for isolated "-" to force a break and greatly facilitate moving blocks of unformatted text between PF and other programs.

You might consider the convention used on many online forums, whereby one has a pulldown menu choice of your simplified tagset (with plain text defaults), html, or perhaps some other set of formatting tags. The fact that preformatted text is an option does not change my suggestion, because that turns off line wrap which is certainly not today's convention for plain text. Suggestions added.

Matthias: Is it possible to navigate to a new page via URL? e.g., http://..../new?page=nameofthenewpage? I have a JScript-Calendar which does a window.location xyz if the user clicks on a specific date. If the page xyz exists, then the URL http://.../xyz leads to this page as wanted; but if not, it ends up with http://.../pf/Search?q=xyz. You may be able to get something working by looking at the create new page form, and see what it is submitting, as it has I believe the behavior you're looking for The problem here is that the edit-URL uses the page# instead of the pagename... and http://.../newname/edit is not valid. Thanks. It's not such a big problem.

Matthias: Some thoughts reg. the enterprise version. All user accounts belong to the entire site. They have nothing to do with groups so far. Ok. If I logon with such an account and go to different groups and post something here and there, my name is inserted as a page-reference (my homepage). Ok. But this homepage is a different page in each and every group. Such a homepage usually only exists in my own "home-group" I'm belonging to (and where I have full read/write access). In other words: A homepage should really be in a space independet from any group because the whole account is independent from groups, too. As an alternative, specifying the users "home-group" (=siteprefix) would help in that the prefix could be automatically prependet to every homepage-link...... This goes in the same direction as a previous posting regarding common page-templates for all groups... and a search over all groups... We're considering some bigger picture stuff for users in the enterprise model that would encapsulate this and more.

Matthias: As a site admin I have to administer many groups. Perhaps it would save time (1 or 2 klicks...) if the group admin page would be accessible through the dialog which appears after clicking on the little triangle after the group name in the Group-Directory page. I.o.W.: a 2nd link Group Admin besides Group Home in the Information-page would be fine ;-) Appreciate the situation, but because the "work-around" is so simple...

Matthias: I've noticed that, when a *** header containing a [link] *** is included elsewhere via [toc:], this link isn't rendered but instead displayed as [link]... Is this intended? May be a bug; have filed a bug report.

Matthias: Clicking the Print-Link and then printing with SeaMonkey 1.04 only ever prints out the first page. Theme is adapted from broadcast, no changes in print-css. Any idea? Have filed a report; will investigate further

Matthias:

  1. Is there another way to navigate to the site administration panel than to link to /admin/site.html? No
  2. Exit Site Administration always ends in the group directory, right? No way to return to where I came from, I suppose...No

Matthias: Help! Just discovered that the Edit-textarea has no ID! This prevents me from using something like this. In addition, it would be helpfull if the specification of a page-header and -footer would differentiate between normal pages and pages in edit-mode. We're in the process of making some changes on the edit page; however, we're not trying to support such 'external' editors at present

Matthias: [attachment menu overlaps in subsequent rows]... Yes, this is a known bug
Matthias: Is it possible to escape a single special Wiki-markup-character, with a backslash or something. No, this is presently not possible. If html-formatting is enabled, html names or character codes like &brvbar; or &#166; can be used, e.g. in table cells.
Matthias: Is a doc about "macros" like

    %%PROJECTSLIST%%
available anywhere (I suppose there are additional, interesting "macros"?)?
Matthias: for testing purposes, I have a CGI that returns current time. I noticed that reloading the page does not update the time, in spite of sending apropiate (I hope) Expires- and Cache-Control- headers in my CGI. I think - and read somewhere about it in the support material - this has to do with Caching so PF can rebuild/render pages with [include:]s and Custom-Handlers faster. But what if I want no caching in special cases???

Matthias: Why is it impossible to name pages only with numerics, e.g. [12345678]? I Know, those kind of names are ugly, but sometimes they would make sense...
Matthias: The symbol attached to attachements often disturbs listings etc. It would be fine if this symbol could optionally be suppressed...
Matthias: Because [include:]ed pages only retain their body, ccs-styles get lost. Does someone know a work-around? OK, I found a solution by myself: use JScript in the body to set css properties... but this requires heavy changes to the page sources.... Also I read that browsers interpret <link rel=...> tags in the body which is against all standards, of course. Perhaps it would be better if PF would include <link rel...> and css codings in it's own head, but this then would eventually (likely) interfer with PFs own css settings.... hm.... For me, the conclusion is: sometimes, [include:]ing other pages only makes sense if this page are specially prepared for inclusion.

[Naima]: How do I change the order of apperance of groups on the main page. I created a new group, it was listed 2nd on the group list on the ProjectForum homepage instead of shown at the end, even though it still . The 3rd group created appears at the top of the list. I've already checked the User Guide. I am using the Demo version 5.1.2.1794 with full functionality. Thx

[Nima]: Creating Pages Links on the Project Forum User Guide specifies that once you create a link to a page this will be shown under "References" of the page being referenced. Mine doesn't. I created a link to Page 2 from within page 1. I can access the page when I click the link on page1, but when I go to the "References" button on page2, page1 isn't listed there. Any idea why this is happening and how to solve it? I tried exiting and relaunching Project Forum, it didn't help. I am using the Demo version 5.1.2.1794 with full functionality. Thanks,

[Naima]: Can posted comments be imported onto a file such as Word or Adobe Acrobat? Is there a file I can view where are all the posted comments are logged/saved? We'd like to use the Project Forum for one group, with the ability to allow a number of people within and outside the group/organization to post comments in an emergency situation. Currently this is done through a MS Excel spreadsheet, but this poses a major problem as it's locked while someone is modifying it. Any idea??? I am using the Demo version 5.1.2.1794 with full functionality. Thanks,

Sean: One really common problem is that you make a typo in a page name when you're linking to it, which of course creates a new page yadayada, which means you have to change the link and delete the page. If you've done it multiple times with the same mistake, across multiple pages fixing it gets really tedious. What would be *fantastic* is if you could "rename" the page, but when you enter the correct target name, the fact that the existing page is empty is recognized and all the links are updated to the correct page and the mistaken page is deleted rather getting the error that the target already exists...

[David]: Consider adding tags similar to what's used in many bulletin boards for things like font colors, sizes, etc. The option of using regular HTML tags is quite cumbersome. Eg, to make text red, use {red}red text{/red}.

Also, it would be great to have some means of intending (like Blockquote) as well as telling a page not to ignore embedded white-space so you can draw little diagrams in the text.

Tom Moore: The scrambled nature of this page is not exactly a testimonial to the effectiveness of this software!? It's pretty clear that such pages are not well ordered when using the post mechanism, and are totally chaotic when the page is locked down for spambot protection. Something needs to be done about this.

I'm posting my wishlist on my user page, to keep it from getting lost in here.

I like this product - but there are a few tweaks that would be nice at some point - no pressure, Mark ;o)

[Pauls]

Matthias: It would be nice to have a search across all the groups, not only within one group. Is there a technical reason for this restriction or are there some authorization aspects? A bit of both Matthias: Ok, I think it's because each Group has its own db... hm... I think the ability to search in all groups (perhaps from the group directory) is absolutely required....
Matthias: I really like to see paragraph indentation... Ok, I could use something like <p style="text-indent:1em;">, but that's ignored by tables...
Matthias: a nice addition to page templates would be if there where some usefull variables like %%currentdate%% etc., that will be automatically expanded during the template load. And because it's not possible to predefine each and every user wish it would be even better if there where a generic method to define arbitrary %%variables%% or $variables or whatever and the corresponding macro-code to fill in these values. And it would be totally unsecure, but very powerfull if the user could store tcl macos which could be referenced... (like with William H. Duquette's Notebook).
Matthias: It would be fine though difficult to achieve if attachements in some known standard formats (text, pdf, doc, etc.) would be subject to searches (perhaps a plugin-api for such additions makes sense to integrate various converters). To speed up such possible search-operations, the system could build an internal index of searchwords belonging to each attachement in the background right after uploading. And if this is all too complicated (it is, I suppose) it should at least be possible to specify keywords or searchwords for each attachement manually to assure attachements could be located through search operations.
Matthias: Perhaps that's in contrast with the wiki "philosopy", but in reality there is sometimes a need for this: excluding/hiding single/specific pages from being viewed by everyone (that means, extending the per-page-authentication possibilities).
Matthias: If [include:]ing a page from another forum, it would be nice if all the relative Links in that included page would be automatically suffixed with the prefix of the group they are imported from; otherwise the links are invalid or useless in the new context! We plan to heavily use inclusions to avoid redundant data. For now, one have to know if a page sometimes becomes subject to inclusion and have to take precautions (use [ownprefix#link] instead of [link] alone)...
Matthias: If editing a page, a button "Save & Continue Editing" or so would safe some clicks...
Matthias: Links to external sites always open in a separate window (at least with IE 6.x, which some people use... in Mozilla this is configurable). It would be good if this behaviour could be changed (globally or better additionally per link).
Matthias: This one is important. Because the browser's back button leads us directly to the last used page (URL), we often end on the edit page-"instance" of the current-page. But what we really want is to return to last page we came from before we started editing this page (...oh my...). My solution yet is 1. clicking on the References-Link and 2. hoping to find the page I came from there and 3.Klick on this page. It would be better to give each page a direct link to the previously visited page (a sort of back-Link).
Matthias: The Attach File-Dialog could contain an input field in which the [file:nnnnn optional Comment] could be specified.
Matthias: Just ideas. I suppose in the heart of PF/CF a webserver does it's work ;-) This integrated webserver could, optionally and additionally easily host a static webroot, which is sometimes (often) needed. E.g., referencing a local copy of ActiveTcl's html documentation through http isn't possible without an additional webserver. And the next possibility would be to serve CGIs or something like tclhttpd's DomainHandler, so it would be possible to dynamically extend PF without the need for an external webserver. I think PF will and should not compete with a complete webserver-battleship, but the benefit for the customers where great.
Matthias: Now something less abstract. Specifying absolut image dimensions is often laborious; why not something like [image:12345@50%] to scale each dimension down by 50%? I wouldn't even have to know about the actual dimensions, then.
Matthias: Meanwhile I did further testing regarding URL-adressing. Not only öäü and such, but a simple '.' avoids PF from interpreting the URL (which is no problem in Searches). The reason for navigating through pagename instead of pagenumber is that this name we want to navigate to eventually is constructed from outside (e.g., Javascript). Perhaps the general ability to convert pagenumbers to URLs and vice versa via a special function/syntax would be helpful in such rare cases.
Steve: Resizing by a percentage is something I very much want. But I would also like to be able to specify one dimension and let the other be calculated. For example [image:12345@256x*] where * means calculate assuming constrained proportions. Combine this with making the image clickable and this is a reasonably convenient way to do thumbnails.
Steve: I particularly miss being able to center images on the page. I hate having to break out into html in order to achieve the effect I want.
Steve: I very much agree with Matthias with regard to being able to have group and project level variables which are automatically substituted. I'm thinking here of string constants rather than functions - a form of symbolic abbreviation.
Steve: Being able to include some dynamic functionality into ProjectForum would be enormously helpful. The current inclusion functionality is crippled by caching the results of a query :( I run ProjectForum on UNIX and what I very much need is the ability to execute small shells scripts. I'm perfectly happy to utilise the custom link types for this, for security, but having to call a URL is rather clumsy. It is vital that the caching is controllable (by default off, I suggest) and that it is possible to pass parameters through. I would also like to be able to indicate that the result of the script is an image, plain text, html text or (most usefully) wiki text - I would be very happy to specify the mime-type. (Is there a mime-type for PF wiki text???)
Matthias: We often attach multiple images. Would be even faster if it would be possible to choose multiple images in the file open dialog at a time. I wonder if things could be even simpler by implementing some kind of drag&drop-receiver (using events like onBeforePaste, onDragStart, onDrop, onPaste etc.) to insert images via clipboard... Meanwhile I googled around a little and found out this topic is very complex, browser specific and security relevant. Ok, any other idea to simplify bulk uploads to a specific wiki page? Perhaps a little (Tk-)script would help that implements a drag&drop-receiver, stores the contens somewhere as a temporary file and then calls the imageupload-URL programmatically...

Matthias: It should be possible to reference an page-anchor via wiki-adressing, e.g. [Name-of-the-wikipage?anchorname] to advance to a specific part of a page. I think for now, it's only possible with absolut http-Adressing....
Matthias: I know, things should be kept simple, but whats is really often needed (I think) is UNDERLINEd text. Perhaps some new markup like '_item_'? Not so often needed, but also very usefull is STRIKEd text, perhaps via '-item-'...
Matthias: formatting options for TABLES should be enhanced, e.g. optionally display tablehead with a different formating (background, bold...) etc. etc. Perhaps, some new keywords for the [tablestyle:...]-setting?

Sean: (related to my question on the main support page) I would love to see a little more functionality with respect to Todo lists... Specifically what I envision is a dynamically created Todo list created just by linking to it from other pages. So for example, if I was working on Meeting Minutes, I could include in the meeting minutes something like:

[todo Sean:] Draft report to customer

and then a line item appears on [Sean Todo] that includes the page reference *and* whatever follows on the same line. Then, when I've completed the task I can just edit the original page and remove the link. Even better, perhaps it could be possible to include a keyword afterwards:

[todo Sean High:] Draft report to customer

which would categorize it under a heading "High" (or whatever the keyword is). Could also be categorized by project...

I've been trying to cobble together something similar now, but there are a few barriers:

  1. [references:] does not include pages from other forums...
  2. Doesn't seem to be a way to include references from other pages (so I was trying to set up the keywords by having a separate page: "Sean Todo High" that only contained [references:] that you could then include under the heading "High" with [include:Sean Todo High] but of course (and it belatedly made sense), that only includes the references to "Sean Todo" again.

Sean: Was trying another work around for my todos using custom links but was stymied again because I can't capture the referring page. It would be cool if both the page title and a url from the referring page were passed as well; just make it more flexible for us control freaks.

Matthias: In the logon-dialog, the initial cursor should be positioned into the username field via JScript setfocus().
Matthias: It is difficult to catch the actual page name to include it in another page via Ctrl+V...
Matthias: Just dicovered that the size of the edit window, like other preferences, is remembered via cookies. Because of my security paranoia, I always delete all cookies after browsing, so my preferences get lost. Would it be possible to store such settings within the user-data-area inside PF's databases? Or at least to give a (global default) for the edit-size via site-/group-admin? Thanks a lot. The new (v5.2) edit windows is great - walk on in that direction!
DavidS: On the top of the Group and Project Home pages, the title bar just says "HOME". How about displaying the name of the Group/Project in front of that? (It apparently varies depending on the theme that's chosen. But ... putting the label "HOME" at the left and the name at the far right or somewhere else isn't very clear.) If the name of the group/project is set in the forum's admin pages, it will appear in the title area
Matthias, today, on the Tickler's Wiki, I read a suggestion for Wikit which makes also sense for PF, I think: What about a URL that returns the preformatted content of the user-area of the page (that is, the user-defined content) only? That way, it would be more easy (or easier? my english is bad...) to present infos from PF elsewhere (readonly, shure).
